RELEASE THE KRAKEN!

Beware! Something monstrous is lurking beneath the waves... and our Book Talk group has been diving into the deep!

This week in Book Talk, we have been sinking our teeth into the thrilling story Deadly Deep by Jennifer Killick and things have taken a TERRIFYING turn!

Picture the scene... A group of friends are enjoying a school trip aboard a cruise ship in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. What could possibly go wrong? Well, quite a lot actually! Suddenly, a deafening BANG rocks the ship, sending some of the characters tumbling overboard into the mysterious depths below. GULP! What could be lurking beneath the surface?

As we examined the book's rather sinister front cover, we spotted some enormous tentacles and a pair of menacing eyes staring back at us. This sparked a fascinating discussion about one of the ocean's most legendary monsters... THE KRAKEN!

But what exactly is the Kraken?

According to Scandinavian folklore, the Kraken is a gigantic sea monster said to dwell in the dark depths of the ocean. Often described as an enormous octopus or squid-like creature, this terrifying beast was believed to have tentacles powerful enough to drag entire ships beneath the waves! Sailors once told chilling tales of this mysterious monster rising from the sea, creating enormous whirlpools and causing chaos for anyone unfortunate enough to cross its path. Thankfully, the Kraken belongs to the world of myths and legends... or does it?

Armed with this spine-tingling inspiration, our budding authors set to work researching the Kraken before creating their very own monstrous descriptions. Their mission? To bring this legendary beast to life using figurative language!

And WOW, did they deliver!

From expanded noun phrases describing slimy, snake-like tentacles to personification that made the furious ocean roar with rage, the children certainly knew how to send shivers down their readers' spines! Their spectacular similes helped us imagine the Kraken's terrifying size, strength and sinister appearance.

But the creativity didn't stop with the writing! The children transformed their descriptions into incredible pieces of artwork, adding twisting tentacles and striking images of the Kraken to make their work quite literally POP off the page!

I was mightily impressed by the imagination, vocabulary and effort that went into every single piece. The finished creations look absolutely INCREDIBLE and are guaranteed to catch your eye!

One thing is for certain... we have some seriously talented young writers aboard our ship!

Watch out, everyone... THE KRAKEN HAS BEEN RELEASED!
