Eight Legs or Six? We Found Out!
On Tuesday, it was an extra special day for Year 1—we were incredibly lucky to have a visit from a real-life professor! Professor Lee joined us to teach us all about spiders vs. butterflies, and the children were absolutely fascinated from start to finish.
Professor Lee brought along some amazing specimens for us to explore. We were able to look closely at spiders and insects preserved in resin. This gave everyone a chance to notice the tiny details we don’t usually see—especially the legs! We learned that spiders have eight legs, while insects (like butterflies and ants) have six.
After our mini science lesson, we put our new knowledge to the test with a hands-on activity. Using playdough, the children carefully created their own ants—making sure to include the correct number of legs. Once the ants were complete, they were challenged to make playdough spiders… and discovered that eight legs is a lot to fit onto one model!
A big thank-you to Professor Lee for sharing such a fun and fascinating session with us! Also, thank you to Andrea for organising this great opportunity for us!
We had lots of fun!
