Persuasive Writing Fun
Year 1 have been absolutely loving our new book, Julian is a Mermaid! It is a lovely story about being yourself, feeling confident in who you are and using your imagination!
In the book, Julian is inspired by the mermaids he sees and decides to create his very own mermaid costume. His Nana takes him to a carnival to show off his creativity, have fun and be himself! After reading about Julian’s amazing costume, we knew we had to join in with our own carnival creations.
On Tuesday morning, we made carnival sashes and headdresses. We used feathers, beads, sparkly paper and other materials to create bold and colourful designs. Each costume turned out unique and it sparked a lot of conversation. The children were really proud of what they had made ☺️
After finishing the costumes, we used them as the focus of our writing. We have been basing our work on our fabulous creations and thinking about how to persuade others to want to buy them.
Today, we wrote questions to attract readers’ attention, such as:
- ‘Do you want a new carnival costume?’
- ‘Do you want to be a cool dude?’
We have really enjoyed combining reading, creativity and writing through this story and we look forward to the rest of the learning.
