Read All About It!

Over the last two weeks, our students have dived into the inspiring stories of four incredible women - Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden. These unsung heroes of NASA (formerly NACA) broke down barriers of segregation, racism, and sexism during a time when those challenges seemed insurmountable. Through sheer determination and brilliance, they proved that no obstacle was too great for their talents.

To share their remarkable journeys, the children have been busy crafting newspaper reports that showcase the achievements and struggles of these pioneers. They’ve not only researched their incredible contributions but also brought their stories to life, using a range of journalistic tools and techniques.

In doing so, the children identified key elements of newspaper writing, including:

  • Headline – Catchy and powerful titles that draw readers in

  • Strapline – Brief summaries that spark curiosity

  • Pictures & Captions – Visuals that complement the story

  • Columns – Neatly formatted text for easy reading

  • Introduction – Answering the essential questions: who, what, when, where, and why

  • Third-person narrative – Writing from an objective perspective

  • Past tense – Reflecting on their historical impact

  • Direct and reported speech – Bringing the voices of these women to the forefront

I’m thrilled to say the children have done an absolutely fantastic job, creating newspaper reports that are not only informative but also eye-catching and full of life. I can’t wait to showcase their work - prepare to be amazed!
