Try Time! Year 5 Tackle Tag Rugby
Welcome back everyone and I hope you all had a lovely Christmas! I cannot believe we are already a third of the way through the academic year. It feels like only yesterday we were taking part in I’m in Year 5 Get Me Out of Here.
This afternoon the children were introduced to their new sport for this half term: tag rugby. A few of the children had already taken part in a tag rugby competition last academic year where they won every game, so I was very excited to show the whole class just how fun this sport can be.
We began by getting to know the rugby ball. The children quickly noticed its unusual shape and learned that keeping it off the ground is very important. During the warm up the children ran around the area, scoring a try when “try” was called and throwing the ball into the air and catching it when “up” was shouted.
Next, we focused on the correct passing technique. Working in pairs and threes, the children practised their “rowing the boat” action, stepping forward and aiming for their partner’s chest. They then put this into action by running forward and passing back to their partner all the way up to the try line. It was a little confusing at first but they soon got the hang of it and absolutely smashed it.
To finish, we added a defender whose job was to tag the advancing player. It was fantastic to see the children dodging their opponents, feinting one way and then scarpering off in the other direction.
A really enjoyable first session with lots to look forward to this half term. Well done, Year 5!
