Y6: Can We Save the Tiger?
‘Can We Save the Tiger?’ is a captivating and beautifully illustrated non-fiction book by Martin Jenkins. It provides highly informative and often emotive pages about Earth’s endangered animals. This high-quality and very accessible text has been the driver for our writing topic in Year 6 since the half term break.
Along the way, pupils have written persuasive speeches which they delivered to the Farmers Guild Debating Society (that is, Year 6), created powerful posters advocating for the endangered tiger and composed an in-depth discussion text about the complexities of the dangers that face their chosen animal.
In this final piece, pupils drew on a range of tricky writing devices, including:
-
Emotive language
-
Subjunctive form
-
Blending formal and informal tone
-
Advanced subject specific vocabulary
-
Distinguishing between persuasive and discussion based writing
-
Presenting a balanced point of view
-
Understanding when a word is a conjunction or a preposition, depending on whether it introduces a clause or a phrase
-
Effective use of relative and subordinate clauses
-
Sensible structuring of a discussion text
-
Cohesive writing devices
-
Correct use of advanced punctuation such as semicolons and dashes
Phew! What an amazing range of very grown up writing skills the entire class have displayed.
Each final piece was at least two full pages and they were all beautifully presented. The final published pieces are currently on our writing wall.
Aside from that, a huge well done to Year 6 for smashing out their end of term assessments this week with Mrs Murray while I was away at Leeson House, and for reportedly behaving brilliantly.
What a dream class!
Many thanks,
Dan
