Reading

At Southill Primary, our vision is for every child to become a confident, enthusiastic and independent reader. We believe that reading is the key to unlocking learning across the curriculum, broadening horizons and nurturing a lifelong love of books.

Through a vibrant and inclusive reading curriculum, we aim to:

  • Foster a genuine passion for reading by exposing children to a rich and diverse range of texts, authors and genres
  • Ensure that every child, regardless of background or starting point, achieves fluency and comprehension appropriate to their age
  • Equip pupils with the skills and strategies they need to understand, interpret and enjoy what they read
  • Encourage reading for pleasure, as well as for knowledge and understanding, both in school and at home
  • Cultivate a reading culture where books and stories are valued, shared and celebrated throughout our school community

We are committed to making sure all pupils leave Southill Primary as confident, capable readers, ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges of the wider world.
