Counting, Catching and Keeping Active: A Maths-Filled PE Afternoon!
Year 1 had a truly brilliant afternoon in PE today, and we were incredibly lucky to enjoy it in the beautiful sunshine!
We began the session with some fun warm-up games to get our bodies moving and ready for action. To get our blood pumping, we played a lively game of “What’s the Time, Mr Wolf?” - which, as always, brought plenty of excitement and lots of delighted screams!
Next, we set up a large square using cones and got jogging around the space. To keep everyone on their toes, whenever “strike!” was called out, the children raced to touch as many cones as they could. This was a fantastic way to combine physical activity with practising counting skills.
We then introduced beanbags and worked in groups of three. The children practised their underarm throwing and catching while standing in a triangle formation. They used their opposite arm to point and aim where they wanted the beanbag to go, which worked very well! Each successful catch meant counting up in 10s (which they have been learning about in maths!), but if the beanbag was dropped, they had to start again. Some children showed incredible teamwork and focus, reaching impressive scores of up to 100!
To finish, we played an exciting group game. In their teams of three, one child became the runner while the other two were the catchers. The runner would ask, “Tick tock, tick tock, what’s the time on the clock?” The catchers would respond with a number and the runner had to race off to touch that many cones while the others counted how many successful beanbag catches they could make. This game had children zooming around with huge smiles on their faces!
The whole afternoon was filled with fun, laughter and energy - a perfect combination of exercise, teamwork and sunshine. What a fantastic PE session!
