Football Fever in Year 5

Year 5 have been bringing incredible energy to PE this half term as we dive into the world of football. From skilful dribbling to clever teamwork, the playground has been full of excitement, determination and plenty of impressive footwork.

We kicked things off by working on our dribbling skills. Children moved around the designated area with close control of the ball, learning how to change direction quickly, stop suddenly and weave confidently around their classmates. A key challenge was keeping their eyes scanning the space rather than glued to the ball. Spatial awareness was the name of the game and the progress was fantastic to see.

Next, the children paired up to practise cushioning the ball with the inside of their foot, taking the sting out of each pass before sending it back with control and accuracy. Two touch passing in a static position was mastered quickly and before long some children were confidently attempting one touch passes and even using both feet.

Once the basics were nailed, the challenge level increased. Pairs began passing and moving around the space, aiming to play through as many gates made from cones as possible within the time limit. This activity demanded control, accuracy, teamwork and clear communication. The determination to beat their previous scores kept everyone moving and motivated.

Our final activity introduced the exciting battle between attackers and defenders. Children worked in channels where one defender tried to stop each player from dribbling past them. It was a bit like the Gauntlet from Gladiators but thankfully without the giant foam sticks. Defenders focused on showing attackers onto their strong foot and timing their tackle perfectly to intercept the ball.

The attackers, meanwhile, were determined to outsmart their opponents. Rainbow flicks, cheeky nutmegs and plenty of clever trickery were on full display as they tried to glide past the defender.

To make things even more interesting, we introduced a second attacker. Suddenly it became a fast paced 2 vs 1 challenge where passing and movement were key. Finally, a goal was added at the end so the attackers could finish their move with a shot. This turned the activity into a thrilling race to beat the defender and score.

Safe to say it was a fantastic session filled with skill, laughter and brilliant teamwork. Year 5 truly showed their football fanatic side.
