Invasion Games
This half term in PE we have been learning about different invasion games.
After warming up (usually by playing 'nets' which quickly became over favourite game!) Each lesson primarily focused on attacking and defending, thinking about having possession of the ball and trying to score.
Over the weeks we introduced different sports and sporting equipment. We learnt about how to score in each sport, for example, scoring a try in rugby compared to scoring a goal in football. We talked about how the sports are different from one another.
- You can move whilst holding the ball in both rugby and basketball, but not in netball.
- You score a try by placing the ball down in rugby, but in netball you need to throw the ball through the net and hit the ball into the net in hockey.
- Each session we came back to the same conclusion, all of these invasion games involve having two teams who are attacking when they are trying to sore and defending when they are trying to stop the other team from scoring.
In the photos you can see the children practising scoring using different equipment and working in pairs and teams on attacking and defending. We have enjoyed lots of different games and activities over the half term to develop these skills. Some of the games we played were
- Keep possession - small group game focused on passing accurately, calling our team mates names and moving towards the goal.
- Top target - individual activity focused on using specific equipment to score goals in the same way you would in a game situation using cones as 'targets'.
- Teams - small game application of the skills already practised, rolling the ball through the cones to score.
- Four goal - an extension of 'teams' but this time including hoops which teams can score in when their team mate catches the ball whilst stood in the hoop.
I have been really impressed with the children's team work and resilience in PE this half term. Working as part of a small team can be really challenging, especially when things don't go our way. But the respect the children have shown to one another has been amazing.
I am really proud of you Year 2. Looking forward to more PE in the summer term... hopefully in the sun!
