Nine Games. Eight Wins. One Mighty Team!
Year 5/6 Boys' County Qualifier
The air was crisp, the sun was shining and you could argue that conditions were perfect, not only for welcoming the children back after half term but also for a football tournament on the very first day!
With plenty of parents and grandparents cheering us on from the sidelines and a grand total of nine matches to play, it was shaping up to be a fantastic day!
Thanks to Steph and her excellent note-taking, here's how we got on...
Atlantic 0 - 1 Southill
Goalscorer: Jacob x1
A game of few chances, but a fizzing strike from Jacob outside the box was enough to win us the game. A victory to kick-start the tournament!
Southill 1 - 0 St John's
Goalscorer: Finn x1
Lots of chances, but we couldn't quite make them count! Luca, Wills, Bryce and Ronnie were able to recycle possession time and time again, allowing us to keep the pressure on and create opportunities.
Eventually, our persistence paid off. A pass into Finn on the edge of the box saw him expertly loop the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. Another victory!
Conifers 0 - 2 Southill
Goalscorers: Mason x1, Jacob x1
Wave after wave of attack, yet both of our goals came from set pieces!
A fizzing corner from Jacob was met by Mason, who powered a bullet header into the back of the net. What a goal!
In the final few minutes, a jinking run from Jacob resulted in him being brought down inside the box. He stepped up and dispatched the penalty brilliantly into the bottom-left corner. Cool as you like!
Southill 1 - 1 Wyke Regis
Goalscorer: Mason x1
A high-tempo, end-to-end and feisty encounter. I love it!
We started on the back foot, with Ronnie and Jacob both having to make crucial goal-line clearances. Harry, Luca, Wills and Bryce worked tirelessly to keep things tight at the back, but a loose pass eventually allowed Wyke to take the lead.
No blaming, no shaming. Southill simply picked up the ball, placed it on the centre circle and responded immediately!
A firm pass from Wills at the back was held up brilliantly by Archie, who turned his defender and fired a low cross into the box. Mason was there to meet it and level the score at 1-1!
Both teams had half-chances to snatch a winner, but a draw was probably a fair result. What a game!
St Augustine's 0 - 4 Southill
Goalscorers: Archie x3, Finn x1
Archie was on fire in this game, leading the press and putting endless pressure on the St Augustine's defenders. His hard work paid off with an early brace!
Southill were really beginning to find their rhythm. Reggie, Finn and Jacob were flying down the wings, creating space for Ronnie and Mason to dictate the play in the middle of the pitch.
Archie completed his hat-trick later in the game before Finn added the icing on the cake with a goal of his own. A brilliant team performance!
Southill 11 - 0 Beechcroft
Goalscorers: Archie x3, Finn x2, Ronnie x1, Jacob x1, Reggie x1, Mason x1, Bryce x1, Luca x1
Against an inexperienced team, Southill's sportsmanship and class really shone through.
After a couple of goals went in, we rotated positions, with defenders moving into attack and attackers taking turns in goal or defence. This gave every child the opportunity to experience something different and enjoy the game.
Nevertheless, no matter where they played, the Southill boys were simply faultless in their effort, attitude and teamwork. A real credit to the school!
St George's 0 - 3 Southill
Goalscorers: Finn x2, Archie x1
Finn played an absolute blinder in this game, contributing two goals and an assist!
With Mason and Ronnie controlling the midfield, the supply to Finn on the right and Archie further forward was excellent. We created chance after chance and, once again, the boys delivered!
Another fantastic result!
Southill 3 - 0 Bincombe
Goalscorers: Jacob x1, Archie x1, Mason x1
Our bogey team, Bincombe Valley!
We always seem to struggle against Bincombe, but not today!
Jacob scored an absolute beauty after some quick footwork. He dribbled around the keeper, fooled the defender with a cheeky fake shot and calmly rolled the ball into the back of the net. Class!
Archie and Mason also got in on the action with goals of their own as Southill continued their unbeaten run.
Southill 1 - 0 Chickerell
Goalscorer: Archie x1
With Wyke breathing down our necks, we knew we needed to win our final game. The boys couldn't have started any better!
Some brilliant passing and movement resulted in Archie pouncing on a rebound from Jacob's shot to give us an early lead.
We could have won by more, hitting the bar, striking the post and firing wide on several occasions. However, the boys remained composed and saw the game out brilliantly.
Harry, Bryce, Wills, Luca and Ronnie were outstanding defensively throughout the tournament, helping the team keep an incredible eight clean sheets in nine matches!
What a team performance!
After all the scores had been counted and verified, the news was confirmed...
SOUTHILL WERE CROWNED CHAMPIONS!
Nine games. Eight victories. One draw. Unbeaten. County Finals, here we come!
The children were absolutely incredible today. Their teamwork, determination, sportsmanship and sheer enjoyment of the game were a joy to watch. It was a genuine pleasure to see them entertain, encourage one another and play with such confidence throughout the tournament.
A HUGE thank you to all the Southill parents and grandparents who came along to cheer us on throughout the day. Our Southill community is something special and your support from the sidelines made the occasion even more memorable.
Thank you for getting behind #TheMightySPS!
A huge thank you also goes to Mr. Frampton for making the journey down to capture some photographs of the boys in action.
What a day. What a team. What an achievement!
