Ping Pong Pandemonium: Summer Sports Club Serves Up Fun!

This week at Summer Sports Club, the weather couldn’t quite decide what it was doing (classic British behaviour), so we made the sensible choice and headed indoors for some fast-paced table tennis fun!

We kicked things off with a deceptively simple but strangely addictive challenge using just the ping pong ball. Working in pairs, children stood opposite each other across a table and had to bounce the ball back and forth, increasing the number of successful bounces by exactly one each time. Easy at first… until it definitely wasn’t. One particularly impressive pair managed to reach a brilliant total of 8 consecutive bounces - a true display of focus, patience and possibly Jedi-level coordination.

Next up was our table tennis relay, where we introduced the paddle into the mix. Children had to strike the ball, catch it in their other hand, and then pass the paddle on to their partner, who had to repeat the challenge. It required sharp concentration, steady hands, and some excellent teamwork. There were a few near-misses and frantic saves, but plenty of encouragement and collaboration throughout.

Then came the arrival of “the dreaded dice” and it lived up to its name. After rolling a number, children had to control the ball on their paddle that many times, hit it to their partner, and then repeat the process before sitting down once completed. Under pressure, even the simplest tasks suddenly became Olympic-level events, but it was fantastic to see everyone rise to the challenge (and occasionally negotiate with gravity).

With music adding to the atmosphere, we moved on to mini table tennis tables, where we focused on serving accurately and confidently over the net. Children then worked with partners to see how long they could keep a rally going. Some partnerships produced genuinely impressive sequences- proof that teamwork and timing really do make a difference.

Finally, we finished with small-group matches: first to 5, winner stays on. With full-size tables back in action, children showed great understanding of the rules, improved control, and growing confidence with each game. There was healthy competition, plenty of cheering, and just enough dramatic “that was definitely on the line” moments to keep things interesting.

As always, the session flew by far too quickly - but it was packed with
energy, effort and plenty of fun.

One half term down… only five sessions to go!

Just a reminder: there will be no club sessions in the first week back after half term, so our next session will be Tuesday 9th June.
