Settling into Year 1

A Wonderful Start to Year 1! 🌟

What an exciting first couple of days we have had in Year 1! It has been so lovely getting to know all of the children and seeing them settle into their new classroom.

On our first day, we spent lots of time practising some of our important classroom routines. We learnt how to come to the carpet quietly and sensibly, get out and put away our phonics packs, line up beautifully and, of course, find the new toilets! We also talked about how we can look after our classroom and help each other throughout the day.

Of course, we also had Cool Time, where the children could choose their own learning. There was lots of excitement as they explored the different activities on offer - colouring, the investigation station, pom-pom pinchers, Lego houses, a very popular shop and train tracks. The shop was particularly popular, with lots of children getting involved in buying and selling. Some very enthusiastic shopkeepers were even putting the prices of items up to be very, very expensive! 😂

Today, we had a lovely Welcome Back Assembly with Matt before creating our very own Class Charter together. We talked about how we want our classroom to feel and the ways we can be ready, respectful and safe members of our class. The children shared ideas and came up with suggestions such as, keeping our classroom tidy, using kind hands and sharing.

We then enjoyed our first bit of Year 1 maths! The children worked with their new talk partners and used cubes to build a number they were given. They then had to find that number somewhere around the classroom. The teamwork was brilliant!

Each afternoon, we have also been practising our handwriting, getting those pencils moving and reminding ourselves about our letter formation. ✏️

It has been such a lovely couple of days and I am very proud of how well the children have settled in already. I am looking forward to another exciting week next week and seeing all the wonderful things we can achieve together!
