The Lady with the Lamp Lights Up Year 1
Year 1 had a truly unforgettable and exciting experience this week as we welcomed a very special visitor into our classroom - Florence Nightingale!
To set the scene, the lights were turned off, and the room fell into darkness, helping the children understand that Florence lived in a time before electricity. There was a sense of anticipation and curiosity as the children imagined what it must have been like. Suddenly, a soft glow appeared… Florence revealed her lamp - earning her famous title, “The Lady with the Lamp.”
What made the visit even more magical was the way Florence brought her story to life. She didn’t just tell the children about her life - she shared it through beautiful singing and engaging storytelling. The children listened in awe as songs and stories helped them understand her journey in a memorable and meaningful way.
During her visit, the children were taken on a journey through Florence’s remarkable life. They learnt how she grew up in a privileged and wealthy family, yet chose to follow her passion for helping others, even when her family did not agree.
The children then discovered the challenges Florence faced when she travelled to the battlefields of the Crimean War. They were shocked to learn about the terrible conditions in the military hospital at Scutari - the lack of cleanliness, fresh air, proper care for the soldiers...and of course, the smell!
Florence explained how she worked tirelessly to improve these conditions. The children learnt about her revolutionary ideas, such as the importance of hygiene, washing hands, clean bedding, and fresh air - ideas that we still know are vital today. It was inspiring for them to see how one person’s determination can make such a huge difference.
Finally, the children explored the lasting legacy Florence Nightingale has left behind. They reflected on how she changed the world of medicine forever and how her work continues to influence nurses and healthcare workers today.
It was a truly immersive and memorable experience that brought history to life. The children were engaged, curious, and inspired and told me that they had the most amazing afternoon!
