📖 What Can You See?

Our reading session began with a rather unusual challenge today! On the board were just three words: The Magic Box.

The children were given a whiteboard and pen with

one simple instruction: “Draw what you can see.”

As you can imagine, there were plenty of confused faces! 👀

“How can we draw something when there’s nothing to see?”

But then, we began reading The Magic Box by Kit Wright.

Suddenly, it all started to make sense.

As the words of the poem filled the classroom, so did the children’s imaginations. They began to realise that the pictures they were being asked to draw weren’t on the board or in a book — they were the images being created inside their own minds. 🧠✨

As we listened to the poem’s wonderfully imaginative descriptions, the children added to their drawings, capturing the different pictures that Kit Wright’s words created for them.

The activity helped us explore an important reading skill: visualisation. Great readers don’t simply read or listen to words; they use clues from the text alongside their own imagination to build a picture of what is happening.

What began with puzzled expressions soon turned into a classroom full of completely different pictures — all inspired by the very same words.

A lovely reminder that when we read, some of the best illustrations are the ones we create in our own minds. 📚💭✨
