Y4: Brilliant Writing by the Sea
What a journey our writers have been on over the last few weeks!
Our writing unit, inspired by The Baker by the Sea, has taken us to a small coastal community where everybody has an important role to play. We began by exploring the different jobs people might have in a seaside village, before putting our persuasive skills to work and creating our very own job adverts. We thought carefully about our audience, chose powerful imperative verbs and made our vacancies sound almost impossible to resist!
Next, we turned our attention to poetry. Inspired by the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the coast, we created our own Village by the Sea poems. We worked particularly hard on building sentences from prepositional phrases, rehearsing them aloud and thinking carefully about the images our words created in the reader’s mind.
Finally, we brought everything together by becoming travel writers! We created brochures designed to persuade people to visit our village by the sea. Across four carefully planned sections, we hooked our readers with rhetorical questions and commands, described the sights and sounds of the coast, painted a vivid picture of the setting using expanded noun phrases and finished by experimenting with fronted adverbials to make our writing flow.
It has been brilliant to see just how much confidence has grown across this unit. We’ve talked, rehearsed, shared, edited, improved and, most importantly, written with a real reader in mind.
A fantastic piece of work, Year 4. You should be very proud of how far your writing has come already this year! 🌊✏️
